Despite regulatory delays due to COVID-19, patient access to medical cannabis progressed considerably across Europe during 2020. We estimate that over 60,000 people were able to access cannabis medications for the first time in Europe during the year, bringing the total to 185,000 patients accessing medical cannabis treatment in the region in 2020.
Overall, we estimate the value of the market for medical cannabis to be worth €230.7 million as of the end of 2020. Further, we expect the value of European cannabis to grow with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 67.4%, to reach €3.2 billion in 2025. Part of this growth will be supported by the beginning of sales of adult-use cannabis in Europe which are expected to occur legally in countries like the Netherlands, Switzerland and Luxembourg during the forecast period.
As the patient access to medical cannabis advances across Europe, so too do the opportunities for businesses to embed themselves in niches of the value chain, before the market becomes more established. Bongartz also advises Osram’s Smart Farming business segment, which he led prior to his role at Fluence to develop next-generation of sensor and software solutions for greenhouses, vertical farms and across the food supply chain.
Dylan Kennett (Senior Associate, DLA PIPER)
Dylan has experience in domestic and cross-border mergers & acquisitions, venture capital and private equity transactions, as well as advising on intellectual property matters. His practice encompasses the cannabis sector, as well as technology, fintech, media, sport and entertainment sectors
Conor O’Brien (Analyst, Prohibition Partners)
Conor has been with Prohibition Partners for 2 years, reporting on the emerging cannabis and psychedelic industries. He has degrees both in plant science and a masters in neuroscience. He has been using his research and reporting skills to understand the cannabis industry and communicate this to stakeholders all over the world.
